In Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd, what profession does Mrs. Lovett have?

The story behind the answer

In Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd, Mrs. Lovett is the owner of a pie shop on Fleet Street.

Helena Bonham Carter plays Mrs. Lovett, who recognizes the returning barber Sweeney Todd and helps him establish his new business. When the shop struggles, the pair develop a horrifying plan involving Todd’s victims and Mrs. Lovett’s meat pies. The profession is therefore both a plot device and the source of the story’s dark culinary satire.

Johnny Depp plays Sweeney Todd, a barber who returns to London seeking revenge against Judge Turpin. The film adapts Stephen Sondheim’s stage musical, which in turn draws on the Victorian penny dreadful tradition surrounding the character.

Mrs. Lovett is not the barber, judge, or innkeeper, although versions of the story often connect her business with Todd’s premises. Burton’s 2007 film emphasizes the partnership between the two characters while retaining Sondheim’s songs and score.
