Emily is the first name of Victor’s undead bride in Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride.
The 2005 stop-motion film follows Victor Van Dort, a nervous young man whose wedding rehearsal takes him into a forest. While practicing his vows, he accidentally places a ring on what he thinks is a branch, but the object belongs to Emily, a deceased woman who rises as his bride.
Emily takes Victor to the Land of the Dead, where the film contrasts the lively, colorful dead with the restrictive world of the living. Helena Bonham Carter voiced Emily, Johnny Depp voiced Victor, and Emily Watson voiced Victoria Everglot, Victor’s living fiancée. Their similar-sounding names can cause confusion.
Corpse Bride was directed by Burton and Mike Johnson. It was made with stop-motion puppets, continuing Burton’s interest in expressive handcrafted animation. The character Emily is not the same person as Victoria: Emily is the corpse bride, while Victoria is the woman Victor was originally expected to marry.
