In Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, the Queen of Hearts is called the Red Queen after becoming ruler.
Helena Bonham Carter plays the Red Queen, a tyrannical monarch whose oversized head and short temper are among the film’s most recognizable visual features. The character combines elements from Lewis Carroll’s Queen of Hearts and the Red Queen from Through the Looking-Glass, rather than reproducing either literary figure exactly.
The 2010 film uses a return-to-Wonderland story: Alice is nineteen and revisits the underground realm, where she becomes involved in the conflict between the Red Queen and her sister, the White Queen. Burton’s adaptation includes characters and settings from both of Carroll’s Alice books.
A common mix-up is calling the character simply the Queen of Hearts. That name belongs to Carroll’s original character, while the film’s credited royal title is the Red Queen. Anne Hathaway plays her opposing sister, the White Queen.
