In Tim Burton’s 2010 film Alice in Wonderland, the talking blue caterpillar is named Absolem.
Absolem is one of the figures Alice encounters in Underland, the film’s name for the transformed Wonderland. He questions Alice about who she is and challenges her uncertainty about whether she has returned to the same world she visited as a child.
Alan Rickman provides Absolem’s voice. The character is based on the Caterpillar from Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, where the Caterpillar famously asks Alice to explain herself. Burton’s version gives him a more direct role in identifying Alice as the prophesied champion who can defeat the Jabberwocky.
A common mix-up is “Chessur,” the name of the disappearing Cheshire Cat, or “Jabberwocky,” the dragon-like creature Alice must fight. Absolem is specifically the caterpillar, and he later completes his transformation into a butterfly.
