Johnny Depp played Willy Wonka in Tim Burton’s 2005 film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
The film adapts Roald Dahl’s 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Depp’s Wonka is an eccentric chocolatier who invites five children to tour his extraordinary factory after they find golden tickets in chocolate bars.
Freddie Highmore plays Charlie Bucket, the poor child whose kindness distinguishes him from the other ticket winners. The cast also includes Helena Bonham Carter as Charlie’s mother and David Kelly as Grandpa Joe.
Burton’s version differs from the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, which starred Gene Wilder. The 2005 film includes flashbacks about Wonka’s childhood and was produced with extensive digital effects and elaborate sets.
