The Maitlands live in Winter River in Tim Burton’s 1988 film Beetlejuice.
Adam and Barbara Maitland are a recently deceased couple who remain tied to their country house in Winter River, Connecticut. After the Deetz family moves in, the Maitlands try to scare the new occupants away but discover that haunting the living is much harder than expected.
The town is not the film’s most prominent visual setting, because much of the action happens inside the Maitlands’ house and its supernatural spaces. Still, Winter River establishes the small-town environment that contrasts with the strange, theatrical afterlife shown elsewhere in the story.
The title character, Beetlejuice, is a troublesome “bio-exorcist” whom the Maitlands summon for help. Michael Keaton plays Beetlejuice, while Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis play Adam and Barbara Maitland. The film’s production used sets and visual effects to create its deliberately artificial, storybook atmosphere.
