In Tim Burton’s 1988 film Beetlejuice, the afterlife caseworker in the waiting room is named Juno.
Juno is played by Sylvia Sidney and appears when Adam and Barbara Maitland encounter the bureaucratic afterlife after dying in a car accident. She explains the rules governing ghosts and warns them about their attempts to drive the Deetz family out of their home.
The character is easy to confuse with Otho, the flamboyant interior designer who becomes involved with the Deetzes, or Delia, Lydia’s stepmother. Juno is specifically the chain-smoking official who handles supernatural cases.
Beetlejuice was directed by Burton and released in 1988. Michael Keaton played the mischievous title character, while Winona Ryder played Lydia Deetz. The film’s unusual blend of gothic imagery, comedy, and fantasy became one of Burton’s signature early successes.
