Ben Affleck's bank robber character in The Town is named Doug MacRay.
Affleck plays Doug, the leader of a Charlestown robbery crew in the 2010 film. He also directed and co-wrote the movie, which was adapted from Chuck Hogan's 2004 novel Prince of Thieves. The story combines bank robberies with Doug's relationship with Claire Keesey, a bank manager taken hostage during one of the crew's jobs.
Doug's surname connects him to the film's Boston setting and to the criminal group around him, including his volatile friend Jem Coughlin. The crew's use of disguises, armored-car attacks, and carefully planned escapes forms the film's heist framework.
Doug MacRay is not the same character as Jem Coughlin, who is played by Jeremy Renner. That distinction matters because Jem is Doug's closest accomplice but not the crew's central protagonist.
