Jeremy Renner plays Jem Coughlin in The Town (2010).
Jem is Doug MacRay’s volatile childhood friend and a member of his robbery crew. His impulsive behavior creates danger for the group, especially after the crew takes bank manager Claire Keesey hostage during a heist.
Ben Affleck directed the film and plays Doug, the gang’s leader. The story is set largely in Charlestown, a neighborhood of Boston associated in the film with generations of criminal crews.
Renner’s performance earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The movie was adapted from Chuck Hogan’s 2004 novel Prince of Thieves, though the film uses the title The Town.
