In the Spyro series, what kind of animal is Moneybags?

The story behind the answer

Moneybags is a bear in the Spyro series. In Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage!, he is an anthropomorphic, money-hungry bear who charges Spyro gems for access, services, and new abilities.

Moneybags acts as a recurring obstacle rather than a conventional enemy. Across Avalar, he blocks portals, pathways, and devices until Spyro pays the required fee. He also teaches Spyro important abilities, including swimming, climbing, and headbash. These skills open submerged routes, elevated areas, and breakable obstacles, so Moneybags’ charges are tied directly to the game’s progression.

His greedy behavior is a deliberate comic contrast with Spyro’s heroic quest. Moneybags is not simply a shopkeeper: he repeatedly exploits the crisis in Avalar for personal profit. Near the end of the adventure, Elora and the others return the gems he extracted from Spyro to help repair the portal home.

The character is sometimes mistaken for a fox, badger, or mole because Spyro 2 features many talking animal-like inhabitants. However, the game specifically describes Moneybags as a bear, while the Professor is the mole.
