In the Scream film franchise, the 1997 sequel to the original 1996 film is titled Scream 2. The sequel brings Sidney Prescott back to the center of a new series of Ghostface murders while she attends Windsor College.
Scream 2 was directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson, who also created the screenplay for the first film. Its story uses the conventions of horror sequels as part of the plot, allowing characters to discuss how follow-ups are expected to become bigger, more violent, and less surprising.
The film retained Neve Campbell as Sidney, Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers, and David Arquette as Dewey Riley. It also added actors including Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jerry O’Connell, and Timothy Olyphant to the ensemble.
A common mix-up is confusing Scream 2 with the later television series or with the 2022 film, which was marketed simply as Scream. The second movie’s title uses the numeral, making it distinct from the franchise’s later naming choices.
