In the Quran, which prophet is identified as the builder and leader of the Ark during the Flood?

The story behind the answer

In the Quran, Nuh is the prophet who builds and leads the Ark during the Flood. Nuh is the Arabic form of Noah, and the Quran presents him as a messenger who warns his people and calls them to worship God. His story appears in several surahs, including Hud, Al-Mu’minun, Ash-Shu‘ara, and Nuh.

The Quranic account overlaps with Genesis in its broad structure: Nuh warns his people, receives divine instructions, boards the Ark with believers and selected creatures, and survives the flood. It also contains details that differ from Genesis, including an episode involving one of Nuh’s sons who refuses to board and is overcome by the waters.

The Quran does not simply reproduce the Genesis account word for word. Names, emphases, dialogue, and narrative details differ between the Islamic and biblical traditions. “Nuh” is therefore the canonical Quranic name, while “Noah” is the standard English form used in translations and comparative discussions.
