Leatherface is identified as Leatherface Sawyer in the 1974 film’s extended franchise mythology. He is a member of a cannibalistic family living in rural Texas and is known for wearing masks made from human skin, wielding a chainsaw, and imitating different identities through his clothing and behavior. The character’s family name is especially associated with the original continuity.
A common mix-up comes from later films, which use different names and continuity. In the 2003 remake and its prequel, Leatherface is named Thomas Hewitt, while the original film presents the family as the Sawyers. Thus, Hewitt is not the surname of the original version.
