The number appears in the film as the biblical “number of the Beast,” marking Damien Thorn as the Antichrist. The story follows American diplomat Robert Thorn, who adopts Damien without telling his wife that their biological child died. As disturbing events accumulate, Robert investigates Damien’s identity and encounters the number’s connection to the child.
A notable historical mix-up concerns the number 616. Some early manuscript evidence for the Book of Revelation supports 616 as an alternative reading, but 666 is the number used in The Omen and the version most familiar in popular culture. The film does not use 616 as Damien’s identifying number.
The Omen was released in 1976, directed by Richard Donner, and written by David Seltzer. Gregory Peck played Robert Thorn, while child actor Harvey Spencer Stephens played Damien. The movie became the first entry in a supernatural horror film series.
