In the original Spyro the Dragon, Sparx indicates Spyro’s health. The dragonfly’s changing color gives the player a quick visual reading of how much damage Spyro can still take.
Sparx accompanies Spyro throughout the game and functions as more than a companion character. When Spyro is at full health, Sparx appears yellow. After Spyro takes damage, Sparx changes color to show reduced health, eventually disappearing when Spyro has no remaining protection. A further hit can then cost Spyro a life.
Health can usually be restored by defeating small animals found throughout the levels. These creatures include sheep and other harmless wildlife that become temporary targets for Spyro’s flame. This makes Sparx’s color an important part of the game’s exploration loop: players can judge whether they should seek recovery before attempting a dangerous section.
The wrong options describe systems that do not match Sparx’s role. He does not measure armor, speed, or magic in the original game. His health-indicator function became one of the most recognizable gameplay features in the classic Spyro trilogy, although later games and modes sometimes handle health differently.
