In the myth of Perseus and Medusa, what was the name of the bag that held Medusa’s severed head?

The story behind the answer

In the myth of Perseus and Medusa, the bag that held Medusa’s severed head was called the kibisis.

The kibisis was a special container carried by Perseus during his quest. After killing Medusa without looking directly at her, he placed the dangerous head inside it so he could transport it safely. In artistic and literary traditions, the object is usually listed among the magical equipment that aided the hero.

The kibisis is sometimes confused with the aegis, which is a protective garment or shield associated especially with Athena and Zeus. It is also different from the gorgoneion, the protective image of a Gorgon’s head. Greek sources do not always describe the bag in exactly the same visual way, but the name kibisis is the standard mythological term.
