Which Italian sculptor created the marble bust Medusa, made around 1638–1640?

The story behind the answer

Gian Lorenzo Bernini created the marble bust Medusa around 1638–1640.

The work is a Baroque interpretation of the mythological Gorgon. Rather than showing Medusa only as a severed head, Bernini represented her as a living bust with snakes in her hair and an anguished expression, suggesting the moment of her transformation or her horror at what she has become.

Bernini was one of the leading sculptors of seventeenth-century Rome and is especially associated with dramatic movement, emotional intensity, and technically challenging marble sculpture. Medusa is generally identified with his mature Roman period.

This sculpture is distinct from Benvenuto Cellini’s bronze Perseus with the Head of Medusa in Florence. That earlier work shows the hero holding Medusa’s severed head, while Bernini focuses directly on Medusa herself.
