In the 1981 film Clash of the Titans, who played the hero Perseus?

The story behind the answer

In the 1981 film Clash of the Titans, Harry Hamlin played the hero Perseus.

The film is a fantasy adventure based loosely on the Greek myth of Perseus. Hamlin’s Perseus receives help from the gods and confronts several mythological dangers, including Medusa, the Gorgon whose gaze turns living beings to stone. The production used elaborate practical effects and stop-motion animation.

Clash of the Titans was directed by Desmond Davis and released in 1981. Its cast included Laurence Olivier as Zeus, Ursula Andress as Aphrodite, and Maggie Smith as Thetis. Ray Harryhausen created the film’s celebrated creature effects, including the stop-motion Medusa.

Harry Hamlin is therefore the actor playing Perseus, while Harryhausen was the effects artist. That similarity in names is a frequent source of confusion. The film was remade in 2010 with Sam Worthington as Perseus.
