In From Russia with Love, James Bond seeks the Soviet Lektor decoding machine.
The Lektor is a portable Soviet cryptographic device coveted by both British intelligence and SPECTRE. Bond is sent to Istanbul to help obtain it after Soviet cipher clerk Tatiana Romanova offers to defect and bring the machine with her. Her offer is secretly manipulated by SPECTRE as part of a plan to kill Bond and discredit British intelligence.
The film was released in 1963 as the second Eon-produced James Bond movie and stars Sean Connery as 007. Its plot draws on Ian Fleming’s 1957 novel of the same name, although the film adapts and rearranges several details. The Lektor is fictional; it is not the name of a real Soviet machine.
A common mix-up is confusing the Lektor with the ATAC, the communications device central to For Your Eyes Only, or with GoldenEye, the satellite weapon in the 1995 film. The Lektor is specifically the decoding machine in From Russia with Love.
