The box is a fictional mechanical puzzle created by the French toymaker Philip LeMarchand in the Hellraiser mythology. Solving or manipulating it opens a gateway to another dimension and summons the Cenobites, extradimensional beings associated with pain and sensation. The box is most strongly connected with the first film, Hellraiser, released in 1987.
