The 2018 film that directly follows the 1978 original and ignores earlier sequels is Halloween.
Directed by David Gordon Green, Halloween is a direct sequel to John Carpenter’s 1978 film. It treats the events of the original movie as the only established history between Laurie Strode and Michael Myers, removing the continuity of Halloween II and the later sequels from its storyline.
Jamie Lee Curtis returned as Laurie Strode, while Nick Castle briefly reprised Michael Myers and James Jude Courtney performed most of the character’s physical scenes. The film takes place 40 years after the original attack in Haddonfield, Illinois.
The title can cause confusion because the 1978 original is also called Halloween. The year is therefore important: the 2018 film is commonly distinguished as Halloween (2018). It launched a new trilogy with Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends.
