In the Greek myth of Perseus and Medusa, what magical item made Perseus invisible?

The story behind the answer

In the Greek myth of Perseus and Medusa, the Cap of Invisibility made Perseus invisible. Perseus obtained this magical helmet from the Hesperides, or in some later tellings from the god Hades, before confronting Medusa.

The cap was one of several supernatural aids associated with Perseus’ quest. He also used winged sandals, a special sword, and a reflective shield or polished surface that helped him avoid looking directly at Medusa. These objects allowed him to approach and defeat the Gorgon without meeting her deadly gaze.

The cap is often called the Cap of Hades, Helm of Hades, or Cap of Invisibility. This can cause confusion because different ancient and later versions vary in the exact details of who supplied Perseus’ equipment. The cap’s main function remains consistent: it concealed its wearer from sight.

Perseus later used the cap during his return journey, including while escaping the other Gorgons after Medusa’s beheading. It is distinct from the winged sandals, which provided rapid flight rather than invisibility.
