In The Getaway (1972), which actor plays imprisoned bank robber Doc McCoy?

The story behind the answer

Steve McQueen plays imprisoned bank robber Doc McCoy in The Getaway (1972).

Doc McCoy is released from prison after his wife Carol negotiates with a corrupt political figure. In exchange, Doc must participate in a robbery, but the job quickly turns violent and forces the couple into a long flight across Texas and Mexico.

Sam Peckinpah directed the film from a screenplay by Walter Hill, adapting Jim Thompson's 1958 novel. Ali MacGraw plays Carol, and the film's tense pursuit structure turns a crime story into a relationship-centered chase thriller.

The 1972 version is often confused with the 1994 remake starring Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger. Both films are based on Thompson's novel and use the names Doc and Carol McCoy, but Steve McQueen's performance belongs to the earlier film.
