In the Genesis story of Noah’s Ark, how many human survivors are described aboard the ark?

The story behind the answer

In the Genesis story of Noah’s Ark, eight human survivors are described aboard the ark. They are Noah, his wife, his three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—and the three wives of those sons.

Genesis does not provide personal names for Noah’s wife or for the wives of Shem, Ham, and Japheth. This is why later traditions that assign names to these women should be distinguished from the names actually supplied by the Genesis narrative.

The number eight is also reflected in later biblical references. First Peter 3:20 refers to “eight souls” being saved through water, while 2 Peter 2:5 calls Noah a preacher of righteousness. Those later passages reinforce the count but do not expand the group of survivors.
