In the Genesis flood story, the raven was the first bird Noah released after the Flood, and it did not find a resting place.
Genesis 8:6–7 says Noah opened the ark's window and sent out a raven. The bird went back and forth until the waters had dried from the earth. Noah then sent a dove to test whether the waters had receded from the ground.
The dove sequence is often remembered more vividly because it returns with an olive leaf and later does not return. That has led some retellings to overlook the raven. Genesis presents the raven and dove as separate tests, in that order, before Noah and the animals leave the ark.
