In the Genesis Flood narrative, which patriarch is described as the father of Noah?

The story behind the answer

In the Genesis Flood narrative, Lamech is described as Noah’s father.

Genesis 5:28–29 says that Lamech became the father of a son and named him Noah. Lamech explains the name in connection with relief from the painful labor caused by the ground, linking Noah’s birth to the wider themes of toil and hope in the early chapters of Genesis.

Noah’s genealogy places Lamech in the line descended from Seth, one of Adam and Eve’s sons. Lamech’s own father is Methuselah, a different figure who is often confused with him because both appear in the same long-lived patriarchal genealogy.

This Lamech should also be distinguished from another Lamech mentioned earlier in Genesis 4, who belongs to Cain’s line. The father of Noah in the genealogy leading to the Flood is the Lamech of Genesis 5.
