In the Genesis flood narrative, which mountain region is named as the Ark’s landing place?

The story behind the answer

In the Genesis flood narrative, the Ark comes to rest on the mountains of Ararat. Genesis 8:4 uses a plural regional expression rather than naming one specific summit.

Ararat is associated with the ancient kingdom of Urartu, located around parts of eastern Anatolia and the South Caucasus. The biblical wording therefore identifies a mountain region. It does not explicitly say that the Ark rests on the modern peak called Mount Ararat, although that mountain became the most famous candidate in later tradition.

This distinction explains a common mix-up. “Mount Ararat” is a familiar shorthand, but the Genesis text says “mountains of Ararat.” Armenian, Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions have connected the Ark with different nearby locations, and repeated expeditions have not produced universally accepted archaeological evidence for the vessel.
