In the Genesis Flood narrative, where did the Ark come to rest?

The story behind the answer

In the Genesis Flood narrative, the Ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

Genesis 8:4 uses the plural phrase “mountains of Ararat.” It does not state that the Ark landed on the summit of the modern mountain called Mount Ararat, nor does it identify one exact peak. Ararat is commonly connected with the ancient kingdom or region of Urartu in the Armenian highlands.

This wording explains a frequent mix-up. Popular accounts often say “Mount Ararat,” but the biblical text is less precise and speaks of a mountainous region. Later traditions, explorers, and proposed expeditions have associated various locations with the Ark, yet no discovery has been verified as the biblical vessel.

The narrative moves from the Ark’s resting place to Noah’s bird tests and eventual departure. Genesis therefore provides a regional location, not coordinates or an archaeological description detailed enough to establish a modern site.
