In the Genesis flood narrative, what was Noah’s father’s name?

The story behind the answer

In the Genesis flood narrative, Noah’s father was named Lamech.

Genesis 5:28–29 introduces Lamech as the father of Noah. When Noah was born, Lamech said that his son would bring relief from the painful labor associated with the ground, which Genesis connects with the curse following Adam and Eve’s disobedience.

Lamech belongs to the genealogy from Adam to Noah in Genesis 5. His father was Methuselah, who is traditionally known as the longest-lived person in the Bible, and his grandfather was Enoch. These genealogical links place Noah within the story’s primeval history before the flood.

The name can cause confusion because Genesis also names another Lamech in the line of Cain. That earlier Lamech appears in Genesis 4 and has a different family background. The Lamech who fathered Noah belongs to the line of Seth described in Genesis 5, making him distinct from Cain’s descendant.
