In the Genesis flood narrative, on which mountain range did the Ark come to rest?

The story behind the answer

In the Genesis flood narrative, the Ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

Genesis 8:4 uses the plural phrase “mountains of Ararat,” identifying a region rather than naming one specific peak. Ararat is generally associated with an ancient kingdom and geographic area in eastern Anatolia and the Armenian highlands.

Mount Ararat, the prominent volcanic peak in modern eastern Turkey, later became the best-known location associated with the story. The biblical wording, however, does not say that the vessel rested on the summit of that particular mountain.

This distinction explains why claims of finding the Ark on Mount Ararat remain separate from the text itself. Genesis gives a regional destination, while later traditions, maps, expeditions, and popular culture often narrow it to a single mountain. The phrase “mountains of Ararat” is the most precise answer to the biblical question.
