In the Genesis flood narrative, how many human beings were aboard Noah’s ark?
Answer
Eight people
Answer
Eight people
In the Genesis flood narrative, eight human beings were aboard Noah’s ark.
Genesis 7:13 identifies Noah, his wife, his three sons, and the wives of his three sons as the people who enter the ark. Counting them gives eight: one married couple, three sons, and three daughters-in-law. First Peter 3:20 also refers to “eight souls” being saved through water.
The number does not include the animals, whose categories and counts are described separately in Genesis. It also does not refer to the number of people living in the wider world before the flood, which the narrative does not specify.
Later retellings sometimes add unnamed helpers, children, or extended relatives to the ark’s crew. Those additions are not part of the Genesis list. The biblical account is concise but explicit about the eight human survivors who accompany Noah inside the vessel.
