In the Genesis account, what was the Ark’s height in cubits?

The story behind the answer

In the Genesis account, the Ark’s height was thirty cubits.

Genesis 6:15 gives the vessel’s principal dimensions as 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. The height therefore forms the smallest of the three stated measurements, while the length-to-width ratio is 6 to 1.

A cubit was an ancient unit based broadly on the length of a forearm, so its exact modern equivalent is uncertain. Many estimates place the biblical cubit around 44–52 centimetres, but the text itself does not specify a modern conversion. That uncertainty affects estimates of the Ark’s dimensions in metres or feet, not the stated biblical number.

The height should not be confused with the Ark’s three levels. Genesis separately describes a lower, second, and third deck, showing that the vessel’s vertical design included multiple internal stories.
