In the Genesis account, what was Noah doing when his three sons saw him uncovered?

The story behind the answer

In the Genesis account, Noah was drunk when his sons found him uncovered in his tent.

Genesis 9:20–24 says that Noah planted a vineyard after the Flood, drank wine made from its produce, and became drunk. He then lay uncovered inside his tent. Ham saw his father’s nakedness and told his brothers, while Shem and Japheth covered Noah without looking at him.

The episode occurs after the ark narrative and after the covenant with the rainbow. It is often omitted from children’s retellings because it introduces a difficult family incident and a curse involving Canaan.

The text specifically says Noah became drunk; it does not say he was merely asleep. This detail also links the story to the vineyard Noah planted after leaving the ark.
