In the Genesis account, what material was Noah's Ark built from?

The story behind the answer

In the Genesis account, Noah’s Ark was built from gopher wood.

Genesis 6:14 instructs Noah to make the Ark from “gopher wood” and to cover it with pitch inside and outside. The Hebrew term translated as gopher wood is unusual and appears only in this passage, so its exact botanical identity is uncertain.

Because the word is rare, translators and scholars have proposed different interpretations, including a type of wood or a construction method. Some English versions retain “gopher wood,” while others render it more generally as “cypress wood” or another timber. For that reason, gopher wood is the canonical traditional answer to the wording of many English Bible translations, but it should not be presented as a securely identified modern tree species.
