In the Genesis account of Noah’s Ark, Noah built the ark and led his family onto it.
Genesis presents Noah as a righteous man living in a violent world. God instructs him to construct a large vessel, bring aboard his family, and preserve animals from a catastrophic flood. Noah’s wife, his three sons, and his sons’ wives accompany him, making eight people in total.
The story appears chiefly in Genesis chapters 6–9. Noah follows the instructions, the flood covers the land, and the ark eventually comes to rest. After leaving the vessel, Noah builds an altar and receives a covenant connected with all living creatures.
A common mix-up is assigning the ark’s construction to one of Noah’s sons. The biblical text identifies Noah as the builder and head of the household, while his sons help continue humanity after the flood. The name Noah is also used in Islamic tradition, where he is called Nuh.
