In the Genesis account of Noah’s Ark, Noah placed a covering over the ark’s opening.
Genesis 8:13 says that Noah removed the covering of the ark and looked out after the ground had dried. The passage is a later detail in the story, following the recession of the waters and the bird-sending episodes. It does not call the covering a sail, roof tower, or observation platform.
The ark’s construction instructions in Genesis 6:14–16 mention compartments, pitch, a door in the side, and a window or opening near the top. English translations vary in how they render some of these terms, especially the window. The separate “covering” in Genesis 8:13 is therefore best kept distinct from the ark’s original roof or upper opening.
Popular illustrations often give the ark a large curved roof, but Genesis provides too little architectural detail to establish a single design. The text’s vocabulary supports a covered vessel without supplying a complete blueprint.
