In the Genesis account of Noah’s Ark, how old was Noah when the Flood waters came on the earth?

The story behind the answer

In the Genesis account of Noah’s Ark, Noah was 600 years old when the Flood waters came on the earth. Genesis 7:6 gives this age immediately before describing the Flood’s arrival.

The age is part of a wider chronology in Genesis. Noah is introduced as the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and the text records that he was 500 years old when his sons were born. The Flood therefore occurs later in Noah’s life, when he is specifically identified as 600.

This figure is sometimes confused with Noah’s age when the Flood warning or ark instructions were first given. The biblical narrative does not assign a separate age to every earlier event; 600 is the explicit age attached to the Flood’s beginning.

Genesis later says Noah lived 350 years after the Flood and died at 950. Those numbers belong to different points in the chronology and should not replace the age given for the Flood itself.
