In the first Resident Evil film, the underground laboratory beneath Raccoon City is called the Hive.
The Hive is a secret Umbrella Corporation research facility located beneath a mansion. After the facility’s artificial intelligence, the Red Queen, seals it, Alice and a team of commandos enter to investigate the deaths of the researchers and contain the release of the T-virus.
The 2002 film was written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson and stars Milla Jovovich as Alice. Unlike the original Resident Evil video game, the film introduces Alice as a new protagonist while incorporating locations, creatures, corporations, and concepts from the games.
The Hive is not the name of Umbrella’s corporation or the name of the Red Queen. It is the specific research complex where the outbreak begins. The film’s setting also helps explain why the story moves between the mansion above ground and the sealed laboratory below it.
