In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Utnapishtim survives the great flood in an ark-like vessel.
Utnapishtim is warned by the god Ea to build a large boat and preserve living creatures, family members, and craftsmen from a divinely sent flood. After the waters recede, he releases birds to determine whether land has emerged. The episode is one of the best-known ancient Mesopotamian flood narratives related to the biblical Noah story.
The comparison does not mean that Utnapishtim is Noah. They are characters in different literary and religious traditions, written in different languages and historical settings. Utnapishtim’s story appears in the Standard Babylonian version of the Epic of Gilgamesh, while the biblical account appears in Genesis.
Atrahasis is another Mesopotamian flood survivor from a related but separate tradition. That name is therefore a plausible confusion, but the survivor named in the Gilgamesh episode is Utnapishtim.
