In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Utnapishtim released a raven after releasing a dove and a swallow.
The sequence appears in the flood episode on Tablet XI. Utnapishtim first sends out a dove, which returns because it finds no place to land. He then sends a swallow, which also returns. Finally, he releases a raven; the raven finds food and does not come back, showing that the waters have receded enough for the boat's occupants to leave.
This detail is notable because it differs from the Genesis sequence. Noah sends a raven first and then sends a dove several times. The shared use of birds to test the flood waters is one reason the two narratives are often compared, but their details are not identical.
The Epic of Gilgamesh's flood survivor is Utnapishtim, who recounts the experience to Gilgamesh while explaining how he and his wife received extraordinary life after the catastrophe.
