In the Epic of Gilgamesh, what was the flood survivor’s name?

In the Epic of Gilgamesh, the flood survivor is named Utnapishtim.

Utnapishtim tells Gilgamesh that the god Ea warned him about a divine decision to send a devastating flood. He built a large boat, brought aboard his family, craftsmen, animals and precious materials, and survived when the waters overwhelmed the land.

The flood episode appears on Tablet XI of the Standard Babylonian version of the Epic of Gilgamesh. Utnapishtim’s account includes releasing birds to determine whether the waters had receded, a motif that also appears in the Genesis Flood narrative.

Utnapishtim is not Noah under a different spelling. He is the corresponding survivor in a separate Mesopotamian literary tradition. The earlier Atrahasis Epic also contains a flood story, but its survivor is usually called Atrahasis rather than Utnapishtim.
