In the Epic of Gilgamesh, what was the flood survivor’s name in the Ark-like story?

The story behind the answer

In the Epic of Gilgamesh, the flood survivor’s name is Utnapishtim.

Utnapishtim appears in the Babylonian flood story told in the Epic of Gilgamesh. The god Ea warns him to build a boat, and Utnapishtim survives a catastrophic flood with his family, craftsmen, and animals. His story is one of the important ancient Near Eastern flood traditions compared with the account of Noah in Genesis.

The comparison does not mean the two narratives use identical names or details. Noah belongs to the Hebrew Bible, while Utnapishtim belongs to Mesopotamian literature. The Epic of Gilgamesh also includes a flood survivor named Atrahasis in related textual traditions, which is why names can be confused.

Gilgamesh is the epic’s human hero, not the flood survivor. Enkidu is Gilgamesh’s companion, and Hammurabi was a historical Babylonian king rather than a character in this flood episode.
