In the Epic of Gilgamesh, what name does the Flood survivor Utnapishtim use?
Answer
Utnapishtim
Answer
Utnapishtim
In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Utnapishtim is the Flood survivor who tells Gilgamesh his story.
Utnapishtim is warned by the god Ea to build a great boat and preserve living creatures, his family, craftsmen, and wealth. He survives a devastating flood and later receives immortality from the gods. His account is one of the most important ancient Near Eastern flood narratives compared with the story of Noah.
Utnapishtim is not Noah under the same name; the figures belong to different literary traditions. The older Mesopotamian stories are preserved in cuneiform tablets, while the best-known version of the Epic of Gilgamesh comes from the library of Ashurbanipal at Nineveh. The comparison is useful, but the narratives differ in details, theology, and character names.
