In the Epic of Gilgamesh, what bird does Utnapishtim release first to find land after the flood?

The story behind the answer

In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Utnapishtim releases a dove first to find land after the flood.

In Tablet XI, Utnapishtim describes sending out birds after his vessel comes to rest. He first releases a dove, which returns because it finds no place to land. He then sends a swallow, which also returns, followed by a raven that does not return.

This sequence resembles the bird-testing episode in Genesis, but the details are not identical. Genesis has Noah release a raven first and then a dove; the Gilgamesh account reverses the first bird and uses a swallow in the middle.

Utnapishtim is the flood survivor who tells Gilgamesh his story. The comparison is useful only when the two traditions are kept distinct: similar motifs do not mean that every character, bird, or sequence is the same.
