In the Book of Genesis, who is commanded to build Noah's Ark?

The story behind the answer

Noah is commanded to build Noah's Ark in the Book of Genesis. Genesis 6 describes Noah as a righteous man living in a violent and corrupt world, and God instructs him to construct a large vessel for his household and selected animals.

The ark story appears in Genesis chapters 6–9. Noah receives detailed instructions about its construction, the coming flood, the animals to be preserved, and the covenant that follows the flood. His wife, three sons, and three daughters-in-law are also preserved aboard the vessel.

Noah is not described as the ark's designer in the sense of inventing the project independently; the biblical narrative presents the command as divine. The story is also known in the Quran, where Noah is called Nuh, although the wording and details differ between the two traditions.

The name Noah comes from the Hebrew name Noach. In later Jewish, Christian, and Islamic interpretation, he is remembered both as the builder of the ark and as a survivor who begins humanity's renewal after the flood.
