In the Book of Genesis, what was Noah’s name before the Flood survivor built the Ark?

The story behind the answer

In the Book of Genesis, the Flood survivor who built the Ark was named Noah.

Genesis introduces Noah as a righteous man who lived among the generations before the Flood. God instructed him to build a large vessel and preserve his family and representatives of the animals from the coming catastrophe.

Noah is also a central figure in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, although the details differ among the Hebrew Bible, New Testament references, and the Quran. The name is sometimes confused with flood survivors in other traditions, such as Utnapishtim in the Epic of Gilgamesh.

After the Flood, Genesis describes Noah’s family expanding and presents him as an ancestor of later peoples. His story is therefore both a survival narrative and a foundational account of a renewed human world.
