In the Book of Genesis, how many human passengers are saved aboard Noah’s Ark?

The story behind the answer

In the Book of Genesis, eight human passengers are saved aboard Noah’s Ark. Genesis 7:13 identifies Noah, his wife, his three sons, and their wives as the people who enter the vessel.

The eight are Noah and his wife, plus Shem, Ham, Japheth, and each son’s wife. Genesis does not provide personal names for Noah’s wife or the wives of his sons. The passage therefore supports the number eight more clearly than it supports a complete list of names.

This count is sometimes confused with the number of animals, which Genesis describes separately using different categories and instructions. Some retellings also add daughters, servants, or other relatives, but those extra passengers are not named in the Genesis account. The New Testament later refers to “eight persons” being saved through the Flood in 1 Peter 3:20, reinforcing the traditional count.

The number is specific to the biblical narrative. Other flood traditions have different survivors and family arrangements, so the figure should not be generalized to every ancient flood story.
