Sofia Coppola wrote and directed The Bling Ring (2013), a film about celebrity-home burglaries.
The story follows a group of Los Angeles teenagers who use online information and celebrity-news coverage to locate and enter the homes of famous people. Their thefts include clothing, accessories and cash. Emma Watson plays Nicki Moore, a fictionalized member of the group, while Israel Broussard plays Marc Hall.
Coppola based the screenplay partly on real burglaries committed in the Los Angeles area between 2008 and 2009. The real group targeted the homes of celebrities including Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Orlando Bloom. The movie changes names and fictionalizes events rather than presenting a documentary account.
The film is often described as a crime drama or satire of celebrity culture. Its subject is sometimes confused with a documentary about the same crimes, The Bling Ring, released in 2013 by director Alexis Neiers and others. Coppola’s film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2013.
