In the biblical Noah’s Ark story, which son of Noah is named as the ancestor of Canaan?

The story behind the answer

In the biblical Noah’s Ark story, Ham is named as the ancestor of Canaan.

Genesis 9:18 identifies Ham as one of Noah’s three sons and specifically calls him the father of Canaan. The genealogy is given after the flood, when Noah’s family has left the ark. Genesis later lists Canaan among Ham’s descendants, alongside Cush, Mizraim, and Put.

This detail is separate from the story of the animals entering the ark and from the account of Noah’s sons being saved. Shem, Ham, and Japheth are all presented as survivors with Noah, but the text assigns them different descendants. The passage has also been involved in later interpretations and controversies, especially attempts to use it to justify racial slavery. Those later uses do not change the genealogy stated in Genesis, and the biblical text does not identify Canaan as a son of Shem or Japheth.
