In the biblical Noah's Ark story, how many cubits wide was the ark?

The story behind the answer

In the biblical Noah's Ark story, the ark was 50 cubits wide.

Genesis 6:15 lists the ark's three principal dimensions: 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. Because ancient cubits were not perfectly standardized, converting the width into metres or feet gives an estimate rather than an exact modern measurement. A commonly used conversion places 50 cubits at roughly 22 to 23 metres, or around 75 feet.

The dimensions describe a vessel with a length-to-width ratio of 6 to 1. That shape is often compared with a stable floating barge. The biblical narrative does not say that Noah steered the ark toward a destination; it says that the ark floated while the Flood covered the land.

Readers sometimes remember 30 cubits as the ark's width, but Genesis assigns that number to its height. The width is the middle figure in the sequence 300, 50, and 30.
